Ravichandran Ashwin Hindi National Language Debate: Ravichandran Ashwin, who surprised the cricket world by taking retirement from cricket a few days ago. Now he has once again come into limelight, but this time the topic of discussion is not related to cricket but to politics. Actually, he has made such a comment regarding Hindi language, due to which there is an uproar on the internet and a heated debate has started among the people. The situation is such that leaders of BJP and DMK have come face to face on this issue.
R Ashwin recently attended a college event, where he talked about many topics related to his engineering career. But during this time he asked the students that if any student is uncomfortable in asking questions in English or Tamil language, then he can ask questions in Hindi also. When Ashwin mentioned English, everyone remained quiet, whereas the students jumped with joy when they heard Tamil. As soon as the name of Hindi came, the atmosphere became calm. Then Ashwin said, “Let me say that Hindi is not our national language, it is only an official language.”
The issue of Hindi language in Tamil Nadu has been controversial for decades. In the 1930-40s, when there was talk of making Hindi language compulsory in the schools of Tamil Nadu, there was a lot of opposition to it. Let us tell you that according to the data available on the internet, less than 1 percent people in Tamil Nadu speak Hindi, whereas the percentage of Tamil speaking people is around 88%.
Political stir due to Ashwin’s statement
TKS Elangovan, leader of Tamil Nadu’s regional political party DMK, while giving a statement said, “When many different languages are spoken in different states of India, then how can Hindi be the official language?” On the other hand, BJP leader Uma Anandan issued a statement saying, “DMK appreciating this is not surprising. I want to ask Ashwin whether he is a cricketer from Tamil Nadu or a cricketer from India.” Apart from this, BJP leader K Annamalai also said that Ashwin is right that Hindi is not a national language, but he should also say that it was a language for communication and is now used for convenience.
