Penny currency banned in America after 232 years, ₹ 470 crore will be saved every year
The penny, the smallest unit of American currency, was officially discontinued on Wednesday. With this, this 232 year old currency has now become history.
The currency was like Indian money, just as 100 paise together make a rupee, similarly 100 pennies together make 1 dollar.
The US Finance Department (Treasury Department) said that the reason for abolishing the penny is that it has become irrelevant and expensive. Now nothing could be bought with this coin, not even toffee. At the same time, it was now costing more than 3 cents to make a penny.
Why did Pani stop?
- Effect of inflation- Earlier, pennies could buy candy or snacks, but not anymore.
- High production cost- Made of zinc and copper, but expensive.
- less use- There has been a huge decline in crash transactions, mostly online payments.
- Shortage problem- Many shops were facing shortage of money.
America faces loss of ₹1,500 crore in 2023
President Donald Trump had ordered it to be stopped in February 2025. It costs about 3.69 cents (Rs 3) to make a penny, while its value is only 1 cent (Rs 0.84).
Taxpayers lost $179 million (₹1,500 crore) on making 4.5 billion pennies in 2023.
US Treasurer Brandon Beach said that this was causing loss to American taxpayers for years. Now we will save $56 million (₹470 crore).
The penny originated in 1793
The penny originated in Philadelphia in 1793. America’s first Finance Secretary Alexander Hamilton started it.
Initially the penny had the image of Lady Liberty, but after the picture of Abraham Lincoln appeared in 1909, this coin came to be called the Lincoln Penny.
Several designs on the reverse of the coin changed from time to time, including ears of wheat, a log cabin, the Lincoln Memorial, and the Union shield.
Penny’s journey and fall
- 1793- Made entirely of copper.
- 1943- Cast in zinc-coated steel for one year during the Second World War.
- From 1982 – Made with 97.5% zinc and 2.5% copper coating.
Gradually this coin started disappearing from everyday transactions. People kept it in jars at home or put it in the “take a penny” trays at stores. There was a demand to end it for many years. There are approximately 250 billion pennies still in circulation in America. It will gradually start withdrawing from the market.

Rich people of Italy used to spend Rs 1 crore to commit murder, revealed after 33 years
A serious investigation has been started against some rich Italian citizens in Milan city of Italy. He is accused of paying people to kill or shooting himself during the Bosnia war in the 1990s.
This investigation is related to the 1992 Bosnia war. At that time, Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic had captured the city of Sarajeo with his army. During this time the Muslim Bosniak community was attacked. About 1 lakh people were killed and 22 lakh people became homeless.
In July 1995, approximately 8,000 Muslim men were massacred in Srebrenica. It is considered the first genocide in Europe after World War II.
In this, Italian citizens are accused of giving up to 1 lakh Euro (about ₹ 1 crore) to the Bosnian Serb forces so that they could take them to the hills of Sarajevo. From there, they used sniper rifles to target people walking on the streets, including children, women and civilians.
According to the report, different prices were fixed for shooting men, women and children.
Italian journalist Ezio Gavazeni has filed a complaint in this matter. They have submitted a 17-page report, which includes testimony from a Bosnian Serb officer and a statement from Benjamina Karic, a former mayor of Sarajevo.
Gavazeni had found such allusions in Italian newspapers as early as the 1990s. But in 2022, he began re-examining the case after he watched the documentary “Sarajevo Safari”, which showed that people from Italy, the United States, France, Germany and Russia were also involved.
Now Milan investigators are identifying these Italian citizens. If the charges are proved, he could face harsher punishment for the crime of intentional homicide.
