Cluster bomb: The name of ‘Cluster Bomb’ suddenly came into the discussion during a recent attack in Israel. This bomb is as dangerous as complicated. Its strength and panic are such that once it falls, its effect can be felt in many areas as many football grounds. Let us understand what this cluster bomb is, how does it work and whether Israel has any way to prevent it.
What is a cluster bomb?
The cluster bomb is an explosive weapon designed to damage a large area, not on any one target. When this bomb is dropped from the wind, before reaching the ground, the air bursts and hundreds of ‘sub-sambam’ or ‘bomblets’ (small bombs) are scattered around it. Each bomblet falls on a different goal and explodes there. For this reason, this bomb is highly destructive and can harm a large number of people, vehicles, buildings and military bases simultaneously.
How does this bomb work?
The technique of cluster bomb works in such a way that it contains a main container that contains hundreds of small explosives inside. As soon as this container reaches a fixed height, with the help of a timer or sensor it opens in the air itself and small bombs within it spread rapidly in different directions.
These bomblets may fall on the ground and explode immediately or there may be a blast with some time delay, which keeps the danger for a long time. In some cases these small bombs fall on the ground but do not explode and remain as ‘unexpected mines’, which remain deadly for common citizens for years.
Is it allowed internationally?
Many countries including the United Nations have banned the use of cluster bombs as it pose a serious threat to the life of common citizens. In 2008, more than 100 countries have banned them under an international treaty ‘Convention on Cluster Munisans (CCM)’. However, some countries like America, Russia, China, Israel are still not involved in this treaty and use it in special circumstances.
Does Israel have a way to avoid this?
Israeli has ‘Iron Dome’, one of the world’s most advanced air defense techniques that destroys missiles and rocket attacks in the air. But this system is limited in case of cluster bombs because it contains hundreds of small explosive units simultaneously which is technically very challenging to stop in the air one by one.
However, Israel has prepared a multi-layer air defense system which includes techniques like ‘Davids Sling’, ‘Arrow System’ and ‘Iron Beam’. These systems together have the ability to prevent massive attacks, but still a complete protection from a spread -like weapon like cluster bomb is not considered possible at the moment.
