According to the new order of the ministry, smartphone companies have 90 days to pre-install the Sanchar Sathi app in new devices. What is Sanchar Sathi App?
The Sanchar Sathi app is the successor to the portal of the same name launched by the government in May 2023. In January this year, the Department of Telecommunications had launched the Sanchar Saathi mobile app for both Android and iOS to help users report and protect themselves from mobile-related fraud and theft. After installing the app, users can block lost or stolen mobile phones on all telecom networks in the country. This means that whenever a blocked phone is used anywhere in India, law enforcement agencies will be able to trace its location. The app also has a ‘Chakshu’ feature that gives users the option to report fraudulent calls, SMS or WhatsApp messages.
How is this app useful for users
Users can check all the mobile numbers registered in their name using the Sanchar Sathi app and can also report any unfamiliar or unauthorized connections. The Sanchar Sathi app has another feature called Know Your Mobile (KYM), which gives users the option to check the authenticity of their smartphone.
Support of app to deal with serious threats of cyber security
The government is reportedly aiming to tackle the serious telecom cyber security threat posed by duplicate or fake IMEI numbers, which allegedly enable scams and network abuse, with the preloading of the app on all major smartphone brands. This app has been downloaded more than 50 lakh times since its launch and according to government data, more than 37 lakh stolen or lost mobile phones have been blocked due to it. Meanwhile, more than 3 crore fraudulent connections have also been stopped because of this app.
