India has not made any such promise to the US so far that it will reduce tariffs on American imports. Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal gave this information to a parliamentary committee on Monday. This statement of Sunil Barthwal came when the US President recently said that India has agreed to reduce its tariff to a great extent.
Giving information to the Parliamentary Committee on foreign affairs, the Commerce Secretary clarified that the issue is still going on between India and the US on the issue, and so far there has been no compromise between the two countries.
Significantly, many members of Parliament questioned the statement of the US President when he said that India has agreed to reduce the tariff. Reacting to this statement, Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal said, “The claims of the US President and media reports cannot be trusted, as talks on bilateral trade agreement between the two countries are still going on, India has not expressed any commitment on trade fee with the US.”
India has not committed any commitment to tariff cuts
Apart from this, this officer also said that India’s interests will be taken care of during the business talks. Sources in the news agency PTI quoted Barthwal, “India is in favor of free trade and wants liberalization of trade, which will help in increasing trade between the two countries.”
He insisted that India supports trade expansion, but the tariff war is not in anyone’s interest and it can “recession”.
Sunil Barthwal told the committee, “India will not reduce tariffs indiscriminately, especially in areas which are important for its domestic economy. India prefers to interact on tariff cuts in a bilateral manner rather than multilateral ways to maintain national interests.”
On comparison with Canada and Mexico, who directly challenged the American tariff policies, Barthwal said that their circumstances are different due to security and border immigration concerns with the US. He again confirmed that India would sign only a similar trade agreement which is “mutually beneficial”.
What did Trump say?
A few weeks after his second term, Trump has shaken the global trade with his policies, he has tarted both allies and opponents. Accusing all business partners of ‘inappropriate’ behaving, Trump has announced the implementation of reciperook tariffs on several countries including India next month.
Last week, Trump criticized India’s alleged “heavy tariff” policies and described New Delhi’s trade policies inappropriate and an obstacle in trade.
Trump had said, “You cannot sell anything in India, it is almost restrictive. By the way, they have agreed that they now want to cut their tariffs because someone is finally opening their actions.”
Meanwhile, it has been reported that India has sought time from America till September 2025 so that the issue of tariffs can be resolved in detail and widely.
