Controversy over Twitter brand name

Elon Musk’s company X Corp has filed a lawsuit against the startup over the use of Twitter brand trademark. On Tuesday, December 16, the company filed a lawsuit in Delaware Federal Court, saying that the Twitter brand is still alive and is not for anyone’s use.

Startup company Bluebird applied

Let us tell you that American social media startup Bluebird had applied to use the Twitter trademark, regarding which Elon Musk’s company X Corp has filed an affidavit in the Federal Court, calling it an attempt to steal the trademark. At the same time, Bluebird founder Michael Peroff, while responding to the lawsuit filed by X, said that we have applied to cancel the Twitter brand on the basis of trademark rules and we hope to be successful in it.

The founder of Bluebird further said in his statement that we are fully prepared to go further to achieve our goal. At present no statement has been given by X Corp and the attorneys on this complaint. Let us tell you that in 2022, Elon Musk had bought the microblogging platform Twitter for $44 billion. It was later rebranded to X.

X posted after rebranding

X Corp had said through a social media post in 2023 that the company is freeing the Twitter brand and all its affiliates. Startup Bluebird, which operates from the US state of Virginia, applied to the US Patent and Trademark Office on December 2 to cancel the federal Twitter trademark of X. In this, Bluebird said that we want to use the Twitter trademark and create a rival platform twitter.new. Besides, the startup has also applied separately to register the Twitter mark in its name.

The application to patent the Twitter name was filed by former Twitter trademark lawyer Stephen Coates, who is currently Bluebird’s general counsel. Elon Musk’s company The brand will continue to be used in different ways.

Elon Musk said it is a violation of trademark rules

X Corp said in its affidavit that millions of users are still accessing its microblogging platform called Twitter.com. Every day millions of users refer to the social media platform as Twitter and X wants to continue this Twitter trademark in the future. Twitter is a well-known brand and it belongs to X Corp. Therefore rebranding it would be considered a violation of trademark rules.
