India capitalized on a sloppy fielding moment from South Africa during the second ODI in Raipur, where a double overthrow allowed Virat Kohli and Ruturaj Gaikwad to take extra runs. The match is taking place at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Cricket Stadium in Raipur on Wednesday, December 3.
South Africa chose to bowl first but struggled to slow the hosts down despite picking up a few early wickets. Nandre Burger conceded 42 runs in six overs despite taking one wicket. Meanwhile, the Men in Blue have kept the scoreboard moving and look on track to set a strong total in the ongoing match.
Virat Kohli, Ruturaj Gaikwad Capitalize on South Africa’s Fielding Errors
A messy fielding error from South Africa gifted India two extra runs during the 22nd over. Virat Kohli tapped the ball towards square leg for a routine single, but a wild throw from Tony de Zorzi missed the keeper completely.

The backup throw was even worse, allowing the batters to run two additional runs with ease. Fans on social media immediately mocked the Proteas for the mistake, calling it “school-level fielding” and pointing out how the team panicked under pressure.

At the time of the misfield, India were at 137 for 2 in 22 overs. Kohli was batting on 43 off 40 balls, while Ruturaj Gaikwad was solid on 41 off 46. They added a 75-run partnership that kept the scoring rate high and pushed South Africa further on the back foot.
India Lose Two Wickets Inside Powerplay in 2nd ODI
India got off to a good start after being asked to bat first. Yashasvi Jaiswal started the innings with a boundary off the very first ball. Rohit Sharma hit three fours in a row off Nandre Burger in the fifth over. However, he got out for 14 runs from 8 balls when he edged the ball to Quinton de Kock.
Virat Kohli came in at No. 3 and started confidently by hitting a six off Lungi Ngidi. Jaiswal, however, could not carry on and was dismissed for 22 from 38 balls by Marco Jansen. With both openers gone inside the powerplay, India needed a steady partnership.
Ruturaj Gaikwad walked in next and had some early luck. He scored a streaky four and a top-edged six while trying to settle in and build his innings.
India Field Unchanged XI After Winning the Series Opener Against South Africa
India went into the second ODI with the same team that won the first match by 17 runs in Ranchi. Virat Kohli had scored a brilliant century in that game, and KL Rahul’s side took a 1-0 lead in the series.
South Africa made a few changes to their playing XI as they looked to bounce back. The visitors will be eager to win this match because they have not won an ODI series in India since 2015-16.
Earlier, India lost the toss for the 20th ODI in a row. Despite this unwanted streak, the team has still managed to win most of their recent matches.
