Indian Grandmaster Vidit Gujarati crashed out of the Chess World Cup third round after losing 2.5-3.5 to Sam Shankland of America in the second set of the tie-break game on Sunday.

Another Indian player, SL Narayanan, also lost to China’s Yangyi Yu in the first set of the tie-break game.

V Karthik continued his journey by defeating Dec Bogdan-Daniel of Romania 1.5-0.5. They have reached the fourth round. Karthik is now just one win away from the pre-quarterfinals.

Vidit is the third Indian to be eliminated from the first three rounds. Vidit Gujarati is the third big player from India to be eliminated from the first three rounds of this tournament. Before him, world champions D Gukesh and Arvind Chitambaram were also out. Gukesh was defeated by Germany’s Friedrich Schwane, while Chitambaram was defeated by Karthik in the second round.
