This gang first befriends them through online mediums, then obtains their personal information by promising marriage and finally empties their bank accounts. So far, more than 15 such cases have been reported in six districts of Kumaon region. According to cyber police, fraud of more than Rs 10 lakh has taken place in these incidents. Many such youth in Haldwani, Rudrapur, Almora and surrounding areas have become victims of these cyber criminals.

According to the information received from the cyber police, this gang uses social media and marriage sites. Here fake profiles of women are created, through which they contact young men. In the initial conversation she tries to create an emotional connection to win trust. She deceives the youth by promising marriage after a few days. After this, their banking details and other sensitive information are obtained from the youth through online apps or links. Once these links and apps are opened, youth’s accounts are accessed, and their accounts are gradually emptied.

Robber brides made paupers in different cases
A fortnight ago, a ‘robber bride’ cheated a youth of Rs 1.5 lakh from a resident of Mukhani area of ​​Haldwani. The young man was working in a private company and had joined the woman for marriage on a marriage site. After the conversation, the woman promised marriage and cheated the young man of money in the name of investment. A similar case was registered in Rudrapur cyber police station a month ago. A young man’s female friend, after developing friendship, cheated him of Rs 1 lakh in the name of investment.

In this way, a few months ago, a woman cheated a young man from Almora of Rs 50 thousand by promising him marriage. The woman took account information through the app and emptied the young man’s account. Four months ago, a woman duped a young man from Haldwani of lakhs of rupees by promising marriage. After just ten days of conversation, he convinced the young man to invest and swindled the money.

Cyber ​​police appealed to people to remain alert
In view of these incidents, the Cyber ​​Crime Police has appealed to the people to remain alert. According to the police, these days this new trend of cheating is spreading rapidly. Especially the youth who are searching for life partner through online marriage sites need to be cautious. Cyber ​​police have also warned not to open any unknown links and avoid downloading suspicious apps. If you are talking to someone online, verify their identity thoroughly.
