Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached Washington on Thursday morning (Indian time) on a two -day US visit. During this time he will hold a bilateral meeting with President Donald Trump. Arriving here, Prime Minister Modi tweeted, ‘Warm welcome in the winter season. Despite the cold weather, Indian migrants at Washington DC have given me a very special welcome. I thank him.

Earlier on Wednesday, PM Modi left for America from Marcei, France. This is the second phase of his visit to two countries. He reached France on 10 February. Prime Minister Modi will hold a bilateral meeting with President Trump at a individual and delegation level. He is one of the few world leaders who are traveling to America after Trump took oath on January 20.

Many bilateral issues are expected to be discussed in the meeting of PM Modi and President Trump. Experts monitoring foreign policy have indicated that some sensitive issues may also have talks. However, what will be the agenda during PM Modi’s visit? No official statement has come on this so far.

Prime Minister Modi’s visit is taking place at a time when Trump is threatening to impose duty on goods imported from various countries after assuming office on January 20. Prior to PM Modi’s visit, an American military aircraft had landed at Amritsar Airport on February 5 with 104 illegal Indian migrants, including 30 people from Punjab. This was the first batch of Indians to be deported by the Trump administration as part of action against illegal migrants.

PM Modi will also hold talks with business leaders and members of Indian community in America. Earlier, the Foreign Secretary had said that there is a clear similarity in the interests of the two countries in many areas including business, investment, technology, defense cooperation, anti-terrorism, Hind-pacific security and relations between people. The US has a population of 54 lakhs and more than 3,50,000 Indian students pursuing higher education in American universities further strengthen the relationship.
