On June 29, the cabinet quashed the government order on the ‘Tri-Language’ policy amid increasing protest against the inclusion of Hindi language from the first in the schools in Maharashtra. The government issued a government order on 16 April, in which Hindi was made a third compulsory language for students from classes 1 to 5 studying in English and Marathi medium schools.
However, as the protest increased, the government issued a revised government order on 17 June, in which Hindi was made an alternative language. Opposition parties Shiv Sena (UBT), MNS and NCP (SP) criticized the move, calling it Hindi to be imposed in Maharashtra. The Congress also said that Hindi should be imposed.
