‘Udayagiri’ is the second stealth warship built under Project 17A, prepared by Majgaon Dock Shipbuilders Limited in Mumbai. It has modern weapons and sensors. This ship is capable of dealing with both traditional and non-traditional hazards. It took just 37 months to make it, which is a record in itself.
What is Project 17A?
Project 17A is the next edition of the Shivalik class frigates formed in the country. It has more stealth technology and powerful weapons than old ships. Under this, a total of 7 warships are being built, two of which have been found by the Navy including ‘Udayagiri’. The remaining ships will also join the Navy by 2026.

What is special in ‘Udayagiri’?
Udayagiri has supersonic surface-to-surface missiles, medium range surface-to-air missiles, 76 mm guns and fast firing close-in weapon systems. This will fully increase the maritime strength of the Indian Navy. It has more than 75% technology and equipment indigenous.
Udayagiri’s glorious history
‘Udayagiri’ is the modern form of the old INS Udayagiri of the Indian Navy. The old Udayagiri retired in 2007, which served the country for 31 years. The new ‘Udayagiri’ is not only more powerful, but its design is also fully Indian, which has been prepared by the Warship Design Bureau.

INS Tamal’s deployment in Russia is also a big achievement
Apart from this, INS Tamal, built in Kalinigrad, Russia, was also included in the Indian Navy. The work was done in the presence of Vice Admiral Sanjay Jasjit Singh, the Western Command of the Indian Navy. Many big officials of India and Russia were also present on the occasion. This is a great example of India-Russia defense cooperation.
The delivery of INS Tamal was formally signed by the Director General of Naval Department of Russia and Commanding Officer of the Indian ship. The ship will join the Western Command of the Indian Navy and play an important role in maritime security.
The manufacture of ships like ‘Udayagiri’ and INS Tamal has not only increased security, but has also benefited from self -reliance, employment and MSME sector in the country. Around 200 MSME companies participated in the construction of ‘Udayagiri’, which further strengthened India’s position in defense production.
