US President Donald Trump has said that Chinese President Xi Jinping assured him that China would not attack Taiwan as long as he remains the presidency. Trump made this statement in an interview before his important meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska.
In an interview to Fox News from Air Force One, Trump told that Xi Jinping clearly told him that, “As long as you are the President, I will not attack Taiwan.”
Trump said that Jinping also told him that he and China are very patient. That is, he made it clear that the possibility of taking steps on Taiwan may remain further. On this, Trump had explained to him that it would not be right to do so.
Earlier in February, when Trump was asked if his government would adopt a policy to stop China from attacking Taiwan, he said that he would not say anything on it.
His attitude is completely different from Biden. Biden had said many times that if China attacked, the US would support Taiwan, but Trump has not given many clear statements about it.
76 year old China-Taiwan controversy
The dispute between China and Taiwan is quite old. In 1949, there was a civil war in China. In this, Maotse Tung’s Communist Party won and captured Mainland. At that time, the fleeing Nationalist government went to Taiwan Island and established its power there.
Since then, China considers Taiwan as its own part and says that one day he will bring it back under its control, even if the force has to be used for it.
On the other hand, Taiwan has its own elected government, its own army, passport and currency. That is, he actually acts like an independent country. But most countries of the world do not formally consider it as an independent nation, because they recognize Beijing under the pressure of China.
America recognized China in 1979
In 1949, when Maotse Tung’s Communist Party won the Civil War and formed the People’s Republic of China (PRC) in Beijing, the US did not recognize it as a valid government. Instead, the US went to Taiwan and considered the Republic of China – ROC as ‘real China’.
This was the reason that in the 1950s and 60s, China’s seat in the United Nations was also with Taiwan, not with Beijing. The situation changed in 1971 when the United Nations General Assembly passed the proposal and gave Chinese seat to Beijing and dropped Taiwan.
The US then formally recognized China in 1979 and ended its diplomatic relations with Taiwan. But at the same time he passed the ‘Taiwan Relations Act’. This decided that America would give weapons to Taiwan so that it could protect itself.
The US never openly said that if China attacks, it will protect Taiwan, but never said that it would not help. Today the situation is that China repeatedly states that if Taiwan tries to form a formal independent country, it will take military action.
