US President Donald Trump is preparing to deploy more guards at the capital Washington DC. On his orders, the governors of West Virginia, South Carolina and Ohio have announced to send their states’ National Guards to Washington on Saturday.

With the arrival of about 700 extra soldiers from these three states, the number of National Guards in Washington will be almost doubled. However, people protested on the deployment of National Guards on Saturday.

Trump controls the police of Washington
Trump said during a press conference at the White House on Monday that he had implemented ‘Section 740’ of the District of Columbia Home Rule Act in the capital. This means that the DC Metropolitan Police will now work directly under the control of the central government.
Trump said at the White House, ‘Our capital has been surrounded by violent gangs and criminals. In 2024, violent crime reached a 30 -year low. We will restore law and order with the help of National Guard.
This year 98 people have been murdered in Washington DC and 3782 people have become homeless due to racial quarrels.
Washington’s mayor said- crime did not increase in the city
Trump’s move is being criticized in America. Washington Mayor Murial Boujor said- crime has not increased in the city. According to police data, violent crime decreased by 35% in 2024 and reduced by 26% in the first seven months of 2025. The total crime has also decreased by 7%.
However, firing is a matter of concern. Washington was third in the 2023 firing killings in the US.
Trump used 52 year old rule
President Trump said that he has used the 1970 Home Rule Act. It empowers the President that he can take control of the city police for 48 hours in an emergency condition.
According to the law, if President Washington DC informs the presidents and members of the law -making laws, then the police control can be kept for a long time.
However, it is not clear whether Trump has given this formal notice or not. According to the rule, if the city has to be controlled for more than 30 days, then it is necessary to pass the law in Parliament.
Trump deployed 5 thousand National Guard soldiers in Los Angeles
Trump recently deployed 5 thousand national guards in Los Angeles, which was opposed by local leaders. The President has the right to deploy the National Guard in Washington, as it is a union territory. Earlier in 2020, national guards were deployed in 2020 during demonstrations against police cruelty and a capital attack in 2021.
Meanwhile, a lawsuit has begun in San Francisco, with the Trump administration of sending National Guards and Marines without the permission of the governor. American law prevents military forces from directly involving local law and order.
Trump’s move is considered part of his strategy to increase central control over Democratic cities.
