TRAI i.e. Telecom Regulatory Authority continues to recommend to change the two -decade -old National Numbering System. After the implementation of this recommendation, the landline numbers of the entire country will change. The telecom regulator said in its release that the way the number of mobile phones and connected devices is increasing rapidly in the country, the number system is needed in view of the number system so that everyone can be provided reliable telecom services.
There will be change in national number system
TRAI’s recommendation came after the instructions issued by the Department of Telecommunications (DOT) in 2022, asking to fix the fixed line number and its telecom code. The telecom regulator has taken a big decision based on feedback from telecom operators and experts.
TRAI has said in its recondition that fixed line or landline numbering system needs to be done of 10 digits like mobiles. Because of this, the available numbers can be used properly. Apart from this, ‘0’ will be required to be installed before making calls on landline from all landline. However, the process of dialing by mobile will remain the same as before.
6 months deadline
The telecom regulator has given 6 months time to telecom companies for this change. Apart from this, there is also a plan to bring fixed line portability system like mobile in the next 5 years. TRAI has directed to roll out CNAP i.e. Caller ID Name Presentation Service soon to give relief from fraud calls. Telecom companies should implement this new system as soon as possible. Also, the verification process is advised to further strengthen the fake number.
The telecom regulator has said that 13 digit numbers will be released for the machine-to-machine (M2M) device, which are currently of 10 digits. Apart from this, special shortcodes will be free for emergency numbers, so that the government can use it if needed. For this, there is a need to audit from time to time.
