A 24 -year -old law student was allegedly raped on 25 June at South Calcutta Law College in the town of Kolkata. The victim had said in her complaint that she had asked her father to take her from college after this horrific crime. Shortly thereafter, Manjit and co-accused Pramit Mukhopadhyay and Jab Ahmed left the campus.

Police said that the next day, Manjit called an employee of the college and asked if the police had come to the campus? When he realized that the police was behind him, he called his lawyer friends and college seniors and asked for help, but no one helped. On the evening of 26 June, Monojit and Jab College met about 1.5 km from Balliganj railway station, about 1.5 km from the campus. The police found him and arrested him the same evening. Pramit was arrested from his house the same night.

Police sources said that Manjit told the police that Pramit and Jab raped the victim and made videos and were sure that the victim would not lodge a police complaint as she feared that she could make the video viral. The victim was on the target of Manjit since the day of arrival in college. On the campus, former head of the Youth Branch of Trinamool Congress and alumni Monojat joined the college as a contract employee.

Manjit wanted to teach the victim a lesson

The second accused Jab and Pramit told the police that the victim had first rejected Manjit’s efforts and wanted to teach him a lesson. He offered to give him the post of General Secretary of the College Union before planning an attack on 25 June. Interestingly, this post was given when there was no official student organization in the campus for many years. Jab and Pramit also told that two days before the incident, Manjit told him that the victim would come to the campus to submit the examination form. He was instructed to keep him there by evening.

Manjit’s appointment canceled, both students also expelled

After the rape case came to light, the college administration has decided to cancel Manojj’s contractual appointment. It has also been decided that the accused will have to return the salary received during the interim period. Two other accused in the case, Jab Ahmed and Pramit Mukhopadhyay (current student of Law College) have been expelled from the institute. However, the leaders of the opposition parties have started raising questions how Manjit’s appointment was approved?
