These actor had become a threat to Big B’s stardom, ‘King’ was said to be of single screen, there was one day fee in millions

After continuous flop films, Amitabh Bachchan’s career was up and he became a megastar. Actually, the fate of the superstar had changed with the release of ‘Zanjeer’ and after that he never looked back. At the same time, it was believed that only Vinod Khanna can match Big B’s on-screen charisma. But as soon as his career reached peak, Vinod Khanna took a break from films.

However, in the 80s there was another actor who gave a tough fight to Amitabh Bachchan, and he was none other than the ‘Disco Dancer’ of Hindi cinema, Mithun Chakraborty. Chakraborty may have stayed away from the glare of Bollywood, but in the 1980s and 1990s, his popularity touched such highs that Big B’s stardom was in danger.

Every Mithun’s film was released with 100% audience
Recently, in a digital podcast, Vishak Chauhan shared the old memories of Mithun Chakraborty’s stardom, the oldest theater in Bihar, the owner of Roopbani Cinema in Purnia. He told how this actor kept single-screen theaters alive in difficult times. Chauhan said, “Mithun Chakraborty is a legend, no matter what he says. There was a time when he used to give two films a month. Every release of Mithun was released with 100% audience. We knew that if it is his film, it will be good.”

Mithun was told that you will never be able to become a hero
However, Mithun Chakraborty faced a lot of conflicts in the early days of his career. Some filmmakers even told him even here, “You will never be able to become a hero.” But he saved himself with his talent and hard work. He received the National Award for his first film.

People started believing better than Amitabh Bachchan
Chauhan further said that Chakraborty played an important role in keeping cinema in the hearts of the general public. He said, “When Bollywood was moving towards the era of Elite Phase, Mithun Chakraborty kept cinema at the ground level. Between 1985 and 1990, he gave so many hit films that people started to consider him better than Amitabh Bachchan.”

Mithun’s popularity was on peak in that era. Especially in Rar Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, theater used to be packed to watch their films.

What is Mithun Chakraborty’s unique Ooty model
Chauhan also talked about Chakraborty’s unique but very effective business model. Most of Mithun Chakraborty’s films were shot in Ooty. The budget was low, the crew was low, and the schedule was also tight. Allegedly Chakraborty used to take 1 lakh rupees per day, which was a huge amount at that time, and only insisted on shooting in Ooty. The entire crew used to stay at his own home, Monarch Hotel. Even the theater owners used to come to Ooty to finalize the deal, which made it a small industry.

Gemini Chakravarti Work Front
Mithun Chakraborty is still full active in films. He was recently seen in the romantic-comedy legal drama ‘Shriman Verses Mrs.’ released in May. He is also playing an important role in Vivek Agnihotri’s Mach Awaatez film ‘The Bengal Files: Wright to Life’, which is going to be released on 5 September 2025.
