The first meeting of Mahatma Gandhi and Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was a very special moment in the history of the Indian independence movement. This meeting was definitely small, but it was from here that the relationship started, which later gave a new direction to the freedom struggle and laid the foundation of independent India.
This historic meeting took place on 26 December 1916 in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. At that time, the annual session of the Indian National Congress (Lucknow Congress) was going on there. Big leaders from every corner of the country reached Lucknow. Gandhi was also gradually active in Indian politics after returning from South Africa at that time.
First meeting at Charbagh railway station
This first meeting of Nehru and Gandhi took place at Charbagh railway station in Lucknow. This was not a formal or long meeting, but a normal conversation of about 20 minutes between the two. At that time Jawaharlal Nehru’s views were influenced by liberal leaders like his father Motilal Nehru, while Gandhi was talking about walking on the path of Satyagraha and mass movement.
Although there was no major decision in this first meeting, but this brought Nehru and Gandhi in touch with each other. Initially Nehru did not fully agree with Gandhi’s views, but over time he understood Gandhiji’s thinking and considered him his guide.
Information written near the station
