A spokesman for Air India said that on July 2, the aircraft number AI103 going from New Delhi to Washington DC was stopped to fuel in Vienna. The aircraft technical fault was detected during regular check -up during fuel. Additional time was needed to fix this malfunction. Due to this, the journey from Vienna to Washington DC was canceled and passengers were removed.

For visa-free admission, eligible passengers or valid Schengen visas passengers were provided with the facility to stay in the hotel in Vienna till the next available flight. Whereas for passengers without permission for admission, arrangements are being made to stay till the immigration and security approval from Austrian officials.

After this, the flight AI104 from Washington DC to Vienna via Vienna was also canceled and the affected passengers were booked in alternative flights to Delhi. Also, full refund was given on the basis of their priorities. A spokesman for the Air India said that there is a deep regret of inconvenience and is committed to prioritizing the safety of all the passengers and crew. The decision was taken under the security check initiative before the flight.

Air India and its subsidiary AI Express operates more than 1100 flights daily. More than 150,000 passengers travel in it. AI India had earlier announced that it would voluntarily take out a prior security check to maintain its commitment to safe operation and temporarily reduce services.
