China has expressed concern over the appointment of Uyghur fighters to high army posts such as Brigadier General and Colonel in Syria. These fighters are associated with the separatist organization ‘Turkistan Islamic Party’ (TIP) of China’s Uyghur Muslim dominated province of Xinjiang.
Joint China’s representative in the nation Fu Kang while giving a statement on Wednesday said that-
China is concerned about reports that foreign fighters have been appointed to high positions in the Syrian army. These especially include fighters associated with the East Turkistan Islamic Movement (ETIM) or Turkistan Islamic Party (TIP).
Kang called on Syria to take action against terrorists and prevent them from using its territory to threaten the security of other countries.
Syria gave top army posts to 6 foreign fighters
Last month, Reuters had claimed in its report that new appointments have been made to the top 50 posts of the army in Syria. Of these, 6 posts have been given to foreigners. These also include 3 Uyghur fighters associated with TIP.
Of these, Dawood Khudabardi alias Zahid has been given the rank of Brigadier General and two other fighters Mavlan Tarsun Abdussamad and Abdulsalam Yasin Ahmed have been given the rank of Colonel.
Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) leader Al Julani has taken power in Syria after the overthrow of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. After assuming power, Al Julani had asked fighters of all Syrian rebel groups to surrender and join the army.
Rebel fighters in Syria overthrew Bashar on December 8. After this Bashar left the country and fled to Russia.
What is East Turkistan Islamic Movement?
East Turkestan Islamic Movement (ETIM) or Turkestan Islamic Party (TIP) is a separatist organization from the Uyghur province of China. This organization wants to establish a separate Islamic country named East Turkistan in Xinjiang province. Xinjiang is a Uyghur Muslim majority province of China.
ETIM was founded in 1997 by Hassan Mahsoom in Pakistan. Hassan Mahsoom was influenced by the Afghan Mujahideen who were formed against the Soviet Union. This organization is accused of carrying out murders, bombings and terrorist activities in China and Xinjiang.
