India is expected to heat up more than normal between April and June this year. The Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Monday that the temperature in most parts of the country will be higher than average, while in some areas of western and eastern India, the temperature can remain normal. The minimum temperature is also expected to be higher. IMD chief Mrityunjay Mahapatra said that there is a possibility of heat wave in North, East, Central and North-West India for more than normal.
Which states likely to heat up more?
Rajasthan, Gujarat, Haryana, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka and Northern parts of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu can live more than normal. In particular, there is a possibility of 10 to 11 days of heat stroke in eastern Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Odisha.
Government preparations to protect against heat
In view of the rapid rising heat, the central government has instructed the states to ensure preparations for treatment of heat and heat related diseases in hospitals.
Possibility of increasing electricity demand
Experts have warned that due to heat this year, there may be an increase in electricity demand by 9 to 10 percent. Last year, on May 30, India’s power demand reached 250 GW, which was 6.3% higher than estimated.
Possibility of rain and natural disasters
According to the IMD, there is a possibility of normal rainfall (39.2 mm) in April. North-west, north-east, west-central and peninsular parts of India may receive more than normal rainfall. Also, landslides in Kerala and parts of Kerala and Karnataka in the Western Ghats and floods in north-eastern states have also been expected.
