Sony Reaches Big Milestone, Sold 20 Billion Image Sensors

Sale of image sensors of Japan’s electronics company Sony has reached 20 billion units. Sony Semiconductor Manufacturing, which makes image sensors for smartphone camera, has reported that since the making transfers in the 1980s, the sales of its image sensors have increased rapidly due to the smartphone camera.

The company’s president, Yoshihiro Yamaguchi, told Nikkei Asia that mobile devices have an important contribution to a large number of image sensors. In the last five years, the sale of the company’s image sensors has doubled to 10 billion to 20 billion units. This sales has increased due to increasing number of cameras in smartphones. A few years ago smartphones with dual camera were introduced. Four cameras are also being given in many smartphones. Yoshihiro reported that Sony Semiconductor Manufacturing has three manufacturing plants in Japan. The company plans to supply sensors for devices, smart ICT cameras, laser devices and data sensors used in vehicles.

Sony’s operating profit increased by about 73 percent in the third quarter. The company’s music segment has increased sales. Sony is also getting a good profit from the gaming segment. However, there has been a decrease in demand for its image sensor in North America. The company’s Playstation 5 sales have exceeded 6.5 million units. Recently, the company had reported that its net revenue could be more than $ 83 billion in the year ending March. This is somewhat more than its previous forecast.

In the September quarter, Sony’s Playstation 5 sales have been around 38 lakh units. Apart from creating content related to entertainment, the company also supplies big devices of its smartphone components to the makers. These include American smartphone maker Apple and Xiaomi of China. Recently Sony launched Playstation 5 Pro. It provides double storage compared to PS 5 with Artificial Intelligence (AI) Apsceling Technology for upgraded GPU, Advanced Re-Taking and Better Image Quality. PS 5 Pro has some upgrade in hardware compared to PS 5.
