Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has left the country one year today. Sheikh Hasina has been in India for a year, while her party Awami League and her workers are still in Bangladesh.
In the last one year in Bangladesh, fundamentalists have consistently targeted minority communities. According to the Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Oikeyo Council, there were 258 attacks on minority communities from January to June 2025 this year.
The council alleges that the interim government of Mohammad Yunus of Bangladesh failed to stop these attacks, making the attackers fearless.
Bangladesh’s relations with India are also moving up. The Bangladesh government has several times demanded India to extradite Sheikh Hasina, while India has worried about the attacks on Hindu religious places and minorities there.
However, in the past, the relationship between the two countries has been reformed. Mohammad Yunus sent 1,000 kg of mango gifts of ‘Haribhanga’ variety to India last month. Apart from this, he thanked Indian doctors for helping those injured in the Dhaka Plain Crash.
Pakistan’s constant relationship is increasing Bangladesh
Unlike India, the relations between Pakistan and Bangladesh have continued to improve. Mohammad Yunus has met Pakistan Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif twice in the last one year.
In November 2024, a Pakistani cargo ship reached Chittagong port for the first time since 1971. Apart from this, in April this year, Foreign Secretaries of the two countries met in Dhaka after 15 years.
Pakistan Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar visited Dhaka on 27-28 April, the first high-level journey since 2012. During this time both countries discussed agreements to increase mutual cooperation.
Sheikh Hasina’s coup with quota system
The High Court in Bangladesh implemented 30% quota system in jobs last year, against which students started the movement on 5 June 2024.
Peaceful demonstrations began to demand improvement in the quota system, which soon became violent. During this movement, more than one thousand people died. The result of the movement was that Sheikh Hasina had to leave the country on 5 August.
The interim government was formed by implementing the National Emergency under the guidance of the soldiers and the President. Nobel Prize winner Mohammad Yunus is leading this government and is the Chief Advisor of the country. In the interim government, Nahid Islam, Asif Mahmood and Mahfuz Alam, the major faces of the student movement, were also found in place.
Political parties are preparing for election
There is an order to hold elections in Bangladesh by April 2026. After which Nahid Islam resigned from the government in February 2025 and formed the new party National Citizen Party (NCP).
NCP and Jamaat-e-Islami are holding rallies and demonstrations across the country amidst discussions of elections soon. At the same time, Sheikh Hasina’s party Awami League, considered a supporter of Hindus, has been banned.
At the same time, the Bangladeshi Nationalist Party (BNP), the main opposition of Bangladesh, is uniting itself. His rallies are having a good crowd. The BNP is pressurizing the interim government to hold elections as soon as possible.
Former PM Khaleda Zia is commanding the party. At present, son Tariq Rahman is the acting chairman of the party due to poor health.
Nahid Islam has formed his party from Bangladesh Student Movement. He announced NCP on 28 February 2025.
