Bangladesh’s International Crime Tribunal (ICT-BD) has decided to hear the allegations against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in a crime case against humanity on Sunday. This hearing will be broadcast live on government television (BTV) for the first time in the history of the country. Hasina, who was removed from power after a student-in-law protests on August 5 last year, has been going on several cases, whose hearing has been away from the cameras till now. This decision of ICT-BD is going to break this tradition.

On 18 February, the three -member tribunal ordered the investigation against Hasina to be completed by April. According to the government news agency BSS, the prosecution will introduce allegations of crimes against humanity during public rebellion in July-August of 2024 in ICT-BD on Sunday. ICT-BD prosecutor Ghazi MH Tamim said that the hearing will start at 9.30 am local time and BTV has been asked to broadcast it live. Hasina’s Awami League government was removed on 5 August 2024 after the protests led by Students Against Description (SAD).

ICT-BD has released arrest warrant
The ICT-BD has already issued an arrest warrant against Hasina, while the interim government had sent a diplomatic note for her extradition from India. Most of the senior leaders of the Hasina government were arrested after the death of hundreds of people during the July-August 2024 violence. According to a United Nations report, around 1,400 people were killed between July 15 and August 15 last year. The violence continued even after the collapse of the government.
