Someone has rightly said that there is no age for studying and there is no end for acquiring knowledge. Even though his crimes have put him behind bars, his desire to study has not diminished. In the same sequence, a school for prisoners is running in Banda jail of UP. The aim of the jail administration is that after committing crimes, the mental state of the prisoners changes and they are being taught to change them. Besides, work is being done to make the illiterate literate, which also includes women and their children. As per the rules, the jail administration has also got him admitted in school. This time the prisoners will also appear for class 5th and 8th exams in March. Two teachers from the Basic Education Department are engaged to teach them. Apart from this, the prisoners have also made beautiful paintings in the jail campus, which include portraits of great men.
Let us tell you that a school for 51 prisoners is running in the jail. There are 43 prisoners in class 5th, which include 5 women. Apart from this, there are 8 prisoners in class 8th. The responsibility of making them literate rests on two teachers of the Basic Education Department.
Women teachers teach women. The jail administration encourages them to study. The jail administration does not take any other work from these prisoners except studying. The Basic Education Department has provided books and copies to the prisoners who are studying. Apart from this, the jail administration has created a computer lab, in which the prisoners are being trained.
The jail administration has also got all of them admitted in the Composite School Police Line. The prisoners studying are going to commit major crimes like murder, kidnapping, dowry death, rape etc. Due to security reasons, they are not sent to school, rather their school is set up by making a class room in the jail campus itself. The aim of the jail administration is to bring positive changes in the prisoners and to bring about changes in their mental and social development.
Vikram Singh, the teacher who set up the school, said, “I have been deployed in the jail to transform the prisoners from illiterate to literate. I teach them to bring about changes in their mental development. I first understand the feelings of the prisoners and then answer any question. The prisoners are of all ages. Most are teenagers. They are taught by motivating them. There has been a lot of change. Some people are taking a lot of interest. Also answer questions. There will also be examinations in future.
Jail Superintendent Anil Kumar Gautam said that with the aim of bringing change in the lives of prisoners and improving their mental development, DM has deployed two teachers in Banda Mandal Jail. In which there is one male and one female teacher. Female teachers teach female prisoners and their children, male teachers teach male prisoners.
In Class 5, 43 prisoners have been admitted in the civil line. Also, 8 prisoners have been admitted in 8th class. Their classes are going on regularly. Efforts are being made to bring them into the mainstream of society through education. Reading includes prisoners of all types of crimes.
Further told that there was no system of education here. This system has been started through DM. The aim of our department as well as the government is to bring about change in the prisoners by keeping them in jail. They should be reformed, so that they can leave here and bring changes in their home and become social persons.
