The Supreme Court has expressed strictness on the allegations of intimidation of witnesses in the Lakhimpur violence case that took place in 2021. The court has sought a report from the UP Police on the allegations of influencing witnesses against the main accused and son of former Union Minister Ajay Mishra, Ashish Mishra Teni. The Supreme Court said that the SP of Lakhimpur Kheri should investigate the case and submit a complete report.

In the Supreme Court, the bench of Justice Surya Kant and Justice N Kotishwar Singh expressed strong displeasure over the allegations of intimidating witnesses. Meanwhile, accused Ashish Mishra’s lawyer Siddharth Dave denied the allegations. The counsel for the accused said that every time the case comes before the court, such claims are made to cancel the bail granted by the apex court. His client is being unnecessarily targeted.
While the complainants’ lawyer Prashant Bhushan said that he has audio recordings of attempts to influence important witnesses in the case. He alleged that Ashish Mishra participated in a public meeting in violation of the bail conditions. He demanded cancellation of the bail of Ashish Mishra. Prashant Bhushan said that the court can find out the truth of the allegations.
After this, the bench asked Bhushan and Dave to hand over their material to Uttar Pradesh government’s standing counsel Ruchira Goyal so that it could be handed over to the Lakhimpur Kheri SP. The next hearing of the case will be after four weeks.
Earlier, the Supreme Court had ordered the release of Ashish Mishra on bail on July 22, but directed him not to stay in Delhi and Lucknow, so that he cannot influence the witnesses. After this, on September 26, the apex court had given permission to Ashish Mishra to live in the National Capital Region.
Eight people lost their lives in the violence that took place in 2021
It is noteworthy that on October 3, 2021, farmers had protested against the visit of Uttar Pradesh Deputy CM Keshav Prasad Maurya to Lakhimpur. During this time, four farmers were crushed to death by a car. A journalist also died in the violence. Ashish Mishra is the main accused in this case. After the incident, angry farmers also thrashed the driver of the car and two BJP workers to death.
