Russian President Vladimir Putin has given a big and strong statement regarding the Ukraine war. He has clearly said that if peace talks do not proceed according to Russia’s conditions, then Russia will further expand the areas under its control in Ukraine. Putin gave this warning at the annual meeting of senior military commanders. He indicated that if diplomacy failed, Russia would achieve its goals through military force.
Putin said that Russia wants to resolve the conflict through dialogue and is in favor of eliminating the root causes of the war. But he also made it clear that if the opposing side and its foreign supporters refuse serious dialogue, Russia will resort to military action. In Putin’s words, Russia will not shy away from using force for the liberation of its historical territories.
International efforts intensified
This statement has come at a time when international efforts have intensified to end the Ukraine war. Current US President Trump had recently said that after high-level meetings the agreement is closer than ever. Talks are going on between America, Ukraine and European countries regarding security guarantees and borders. However, consensus has still not been reached on issues such as NATO membership.
Claiming lead on the front
Putin claimed that the Russian army is maintaining a strategic advantage on the entire front line. He talked about further increasing the security buffer zone near the Russia-Ukraine border. Describing Russian soldiers as battle-hardened, Putin said that their combat capability has no match. On the other hand, Ukraine and its Western allies rejected these claims and repeatedly accused Russia of sovereignty violations.
Nuclear power also mentioned
In his speech Putin also mentioned Russia’s growing military strength and nuclear capability. He said that the Oreshnik ballistic missile equipped with nuclear capability will be formally inducted into service this month. Putin claimed that in November 2024, the conventional version of this missile was used in an attack on a factory in Ukraine, which could not be stopped.
Russia once again reiterated its old conditions. Putin said Ukraine and the international community must recognize Russia’s control over Crimea. Apart from this, the demand was also reiterated for the withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from the areas of Eastern and Southern Ukraine which are currently under Kiev’s control. Talks on peace proposal are ongoing, but distance between the two sides still remains.
