A Russian Su-30 fighter plane on a routine training flight crashed in the Karelia region bordering Finland on Thursday evening, killing its two crew members, the Russian Defense Ministry said.

The flight was carried out without ammunition

“At approximately 7:00 pm Moscow time, a Su-30 fighter plane crashed in Karelia during a scheduled training flight,” a Defense Ministry statement issued by Russian news agency TASS said. The ministry said the plane was flying without any weapons and fell in a densely forested uninhabited area.

Emergency services sent to the accident site

Authorities in Russia’s northwestern republic of Karelia have dispatched emergency services to the site of a reported crash of a military plane, regional governor Artur Parfenchikov said.

no damage on ground

“I have received information about the crash of a military plane in the Prionezhsky district. I have dispatched the emergency services of Karelia to the suspected crash site,” he wrote on his Telegram channel. The governor later confirmed that there was no damage or loss of life on the ground, as the plane went down in a densely forested area.
