Renowned sculptor and architect of the Statue of Unity, the world’s tallest statue, Ram Vanji Sutar passed away at his residence in Noida late on Wednesday night. His son Anil Sutar gave this information. He was 100 years old and had been suffering from age-related ailments for a long time.
Anil Sutar said in a statement issued to the press on Thursday that with deep sorrow we inform you that my father Shri Ram Vanji Sutar passed away at our residence on the midnight of 17th December.

Sutar was born in Maharashtra
Born on 19 February 1925 in an ordinary family in Gondur village in the present Dhule district of Maharashtra, Ram Sutar was inclined towards sculpture since childhood. He joined Mumbai’s J.J. Received education from School of Art and Architecture and won gold medal. After this he embarked on a long and remarkable creative journey that took Indian sculpture to new heights.
His famous statues
His major works include the statue of Mahatma Gandhi in a meditative posture installed in the Parliament complex and the grand statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj riding on a horse. At the same time, the Statue of Unity established in Gujarat, which is dedicated to the country’s first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, gave him global recognition.
Ram Sutar was awarded the Padma Shri (1999) and Padma Bhushan (2016) for his contributions. Recently he was also awarded the Maharashtra Bhushan Award, the highest honor of the Government of Maharashtra. The demise of Ram Sutar has caused irreparable loss to the Indian art and cultural world. His works and legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.
