Tension spread in Bhawanipur area of South Kolkata on Friday evening when West Bengal BJP President Sukant Majumdar and Dr. Rajatshubhra Bandyopadhyay, who live in London, were taken into custody by the police after a road conversation. A political dispute arose from this incident.

Majumdar arrived in Bhawanipur by motorcycle to celebrate ‘West Banga Dibus’ (West Bengal Day). He first garlanded the statue of Shyama Prasad Mukherjee and then left for his house on Harish Mukherjee Road to meet Dr. Bandyopadhyay. When his convoy reached the area, the police stopped him and said that the doctors are not at home. But shortly after, the BJP released a video, in which the doctors were seen in their house. Party workers gathered around this erupted on this.

Then there was a fierce debate between the BJP supporters and the police. The activists alleged that the government is not tolerating political symbols and is using the police by making weapons. Meanwhile, Doctor Bandyopadhyay came out of his house and met Mazumdar on the road. Doctor Rajatshubhra recently came into the discussion by asking questions at the program of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at Cellog College, London, after which there was an uproar.
Shortly after the talk of both of them on the road, the police made them sit in their car and took them directly to the police headquarters in Lalbazar. On the arrest, Sukant Mazumdar said, “We did not understand why we were detained.” This does not happen anywhere in the world. BJP workers alleged that the police pulled him out of the spot. It is against democracy. A local party worker said, is it now a crime to visit the doctor? BJP leader Sourav Sikdar said, it is a state -sponsored hooliganism. The government is afraid of a doctor who asked questions and a friend who came to meet.

At the same time, the Trinamool Congress justified the police action. Party spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said, the BJP is trying to instill. That doctors have also raised controversy earlier. The police took action under the law to maintain peace in a sensitive area.
