Ghana got freedom on Gandhi’s ideals
Quame Encrms was the biggest leader of Ghana, also known as ‘Mahatma Gandhi of Africa’. He read Gandhiji’s views while studying in America and was very impressed with him. After this, he came to Ghana and formed the Convention People’s Party (CPP) and started the freedom struggle in the country.
Encrama used Gandhian methods such as non -violence, unity and civil disobedience for this. Encrms believed that without a peaceful movement against British rule without violence, Ghana could become free, as Gandhi did in India.
Encrms appealed to a strike across the country in 1950 under the name ‘Positive Action’. For this, he also had to go to jail, but this further increased his popularity. On 6 March 1957, Ghana became the first country in Africa under the leadership of Encrama to gain independence from Britain.
Ghana’s independence affected the whole of Africa. Therefore, the demand for independence in other countries also intensified. A few years later, many countries like Nigeria, Kenya, Tanzania gained independence from British, French or Belgian colonialism.
