Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the much awaited Sonamarg Tunnel. He was accompanied by Union Ministers Nitin Jairam Gadkari and Dr. Jitendra Singh, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and other officials. The opening ceremony took place at the eastern portal of the tunnel. After the program the Prime Minister visited the tunnel along with the dignitaries. They will leave for the main venue shortly.

The 6.4 km long tunnel on the Srinagar-Leh highway costing over Rs 2,700 crore will keep Sonamarg open for tourists throughout the year and is also being considered a major milestone to connect the Kashmir Valley with Ladakh.

Maximum speed of 80 kmph

The Z-Morh tunnel connects Gagangir and Sonamarg in Ganderbal district of Jammu and Kashmir. This tunnel is located at an altitude of 2,637 meters (8,652 ft) above sea level. It is designed to handle 11,000 vehicles per hour at a maximum speed of 80 kmph. The tunnel has been constructed using the New Austrian Tunneling Method. Z Mod Tunnel is part of NH1 Srinagar-Leh Highway. The project was approved at a cost of Rs 24 billion.

‘Sharp shooters deployed at various places’

Before the inauguration of the tunnel, security has been tightened in the entire valley including Ganderbal district. The tunnel has been secured by the PM’s security team along with the Special Protection Force (SPG). The venue has been closed for public movement. Sharp shooters have been deployed at various places. Surveillance is being done through drones. The deployment of security personnel has been increased by setting up additional posts in sensitive areas. The vehicles and passengers are being allowed to move forward only after thorough searching. CCTV cameras have been installed at various places.
