Inspection after inauguration of Z-turn tunnel

PM Modi inaugurates Sonamarg tunnel
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the much awaited Sonamarg Tunnel. He was accompanied by Union Ministers Nitin Jairam Gadkari and Dr. Jitendra Singh, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and other officials. The opening ceremony took place at the eastern portal of the tunnel. After the program the Prime Minister visited the tunnel along with the dignitaries. They will leave for the main venue shortly.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the Z-Morh Tunnel in Sonamarg today. The 6.4 km long tunnel on the Srinagar-Leh highway costing over Rs 2,700 crore will keep Sonamarg open for tourists throughout the year and is also being considered a major milestone to connect the Kashmir Valley with Ladakh.

The tunnel will also prove helpful in connecting Ladakh region to Kashmir valley.
This tunnel is a project of national importance, which is important for connecting the region in summer and winter seasons. The inauguration of the Z-Morh Tunnel will ease travel for tourists and local residents, and will also help in connecting the Ladakh region with the Kashmir Valley. This project is an important step towards strengthening the infrastructure of the area and improving road traffic.

Now Sonamarg will be open for tourism throughout the year
Let us inform that with the inauguration of Z-Mod Tunnel, Sonamarg will be open for tourism throughout the year. Sonamarg will now develop into a great ski resort. Local people will not have to go out in winter. Travel time from Srinagar to Kargil/Leh will also be reduced.

Tunnel will open new avenues of development: Chief Minister
Z Mod Tunnel will open new avenues of development. Will make travel easier on Srinagar-Leh National Highway. Sonamarg will soon emerge as a winter sports destination. We welcome Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who will visit Jammu and Kashmir on Monday to inaugurate the tunnel. We now look forward to the completion of the Zojila Tunnel, which will further enhance connectivity in a few years. To host international events we have to upgrade the infrastructure. This is necessary to put Kashmir on the global tourism map. I will try my best to develop Sonamarg like Gulmarg in the next five years and become another skiing destination in Kashmir.

Maximum speed of 80 kmph
The Z-Morh tunnel connects Gagangir and Sonamarg in Ganderbal district of Jammu and Kashmir. This tunnel is located at an altitude of 2,637 meters (8,652 ft) above sea level. It is designed to handle 11,000 vehicles per hour at a maximum speed of 80 kmph. The tunnel has been constructed using the New Austrian Tunneling Method. Z Mod Tunnel is part of NH1 Srinagar-Leh Highway. The project was approved at a cost of Rs 24 billion.

Local people were also invited
The local administration has also invited the people of the district. People say that they have been told that the Prime Minister will also address the gathering. However, before addressing the people, the PM will talk to the engineers and workers building the tunnel.

‘Sharp shooters deployed at various places’
Before the inauguration of the tunnel, security has been tightened in the entire valley including Ganderbal district. The tunnel has been secured by the PM’s security team along with the Special Protection Force (SPG). The venue has been closed for public movement. Sharp shooters have been deployed at various places. Surveillance is being done through drones. The deployment of security personnel has been increased by setting up additional posts in sensitive areas. The vehicles and passengers are being allowed to move forward only after thorough searching. CCTV cameras have been installed at various places.

Tunnel 6.5 kilometers long
This project is being considered an important step towards regional development and connectivity. Its construction will help in developing Sonamarg in Jammu and Kashmir from tourism point of view. The tunnel is 6.5 kilometers long.
