Padma Awards, one of the country’s highest civilian honours, are given in three categories. This includes Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padmashree. Do you know that earlier the name of Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri given by the Government of India was not this. This award was given by other names. Let’s know its story…
Started from 1954
The giving of Padma awards started with Bharat Ratna. After the independence of the country, the Government of India had decided to give Bharat Ratna and Padma Vibhushan honors in 1954. From then till today, these awards are given for excellent and exceptional service in different fields. These awards are given to individuals who have done extraordinary work in different fields like art, social work, science, engineering, business, industry, medicine, literature, sports. They are announced every year on the eve of Republic Day, after which this honor is given to the winners in a ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan in March-April.
This name was not there before
When Padma awards were announced along with Bharat Ratna in 1954, only Padma Vibhushan was given. It had three categories, first class, second class and third class. However, this name lasted only for one year. In a notification issued by Rashtrapati Bhavan on January 8, 1955, the names of these awards were changed to Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri.
Second award is given only after five years of receiving Padmashree.
Padma awards cannot be given to any one person for two to three years continuously. There is a rule for this. In simple language, if a person has been honored with Padma Shri this year, then he can be honored with Padma Bhushan or Padma Vibhushan only after five years. However, the rules can be changed in special cases.
