One Nation-one Election: ‘Simultaneous elections will save Rs 5 to 7 lakh crore’, says Joint Parliamentary Committee – One Nation-one Election Will Save Rs 5 to 7 Lakh Crore Says Parliamentary Committee Chairman Pp Chaudhary

A meeting of the Joint Parliamentary Committee on One Nation-One Election was held in Parliament on Wednesday. Two prominent economists on Wednesday appeared before the parliamentary committee considering bills related to holding simultaneous elections in the country.

Harvard University professor and former IMF Deputy Managing Director Geeta Gopinath and Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council member Sanjeev Sanyal gave their suggestions on economic aspects.

BJP MP and committee chairman PP Choudhary said that both the experts gave useful suggestions and gave clear answers to the questions of the members. He said that by holding simultaneous elections, Rs 5 to 7 lakh crore can be saved and GDP growth is possible by 1.6 percent.

According to sources, Geeta Gopinath supported the idea and called for caution on its practical aspects. Both the economists presented their views on the economic aspects of One Nation One Election and how to deal with it.

Chaudhary, chairman of the parliamentary committee, said that holding separate elections for Parliament, Assemblies and local bodies always hampers the education of students and delays the implementation of welfare schemes.

Sources said Gopinath supported the idea of holding simultaneous elections, but raised systemic issues as no country has been able to successfully implement such a practice so far.

He is believed to have cited the example of Indonesia, where authorities faced logistical problems as the country consists of 17,000 islands where civilians live.
