On Wednesday, a student arrested a student in connection with the violence and sabotage that took place on March 1 in the campus of Jadavpur University (JU) in Kolkata. A spokesperson of Jadavpur University Teachers Association confirmed Saumydeep’s arrest. The total number of people arrested in this case is now two.

A leader of the JU Students Union Union SFI said that Soumydeep Mahata, a student of philosophy, has been arrested. Mahta was called to Jadavpur Police Station to record his statement in connection with the violence during the AGM of West Bengal College and University Professor Association of TMC.
Students had demanded discussion on elections with Education Minister
The SFI leader said that West Bengal Education Minister Balata Basu was also present during the AGM. A group of students created a human chain around Basu’s car and tried to prevent them from leaving, and demanded immediate discussion on the pending student union elections.

Protests occurred after students were injured
The minister’s car left the premises crossing the human chain, injuring two students. The protests followed by TMC’s non-teaching staff education wing office was set on fire and several hoardings were damaged in the campus.
Mahta leftist student worker, not associated with Federation
The Leader of the Students Federation of India (SFI) claimed that Mahata is a leftist student activist, but is not associated with the Federation. He said that in view of the arrest, there will be a general meeting of the organization and other student protesters on Thursday, in which the future of the movement will be discussed.

Students demanding student union elections are being arrested
He said, ‘When university officials are assuring to withdraw the cases against the student protesters, who only demanded the long pending student union elections, our students are being arrested. It cannot continue.
Earlier on March 2, an alumnus was arrested
Earlier, the police arrested an alumnus of JU from his rented flat in South Kolkata on 2 March. He was accused of being present in the premises and participating in the campus during protests and arson. The alumni hails from Birbhum and currently works in an IT firm in Salt Lake.
