An exciting match was played between Kolkata Knight Riders and Punjab Kings in the Indian Premier League (IPL 2025) on Tuesday. In this match, Punjab Kings won the match by 16 runs despite scoring 111 runs. However, in this match, the umpires were once again seen examining the bat of the players on the field. In this ‘Gauge Test’, Sunil Naren of KKR and the bat of Enrich Norcia failed.
Know what is the whole matter
In the match played in Mullanpur, Chandigarh, the Punjab team scored 111 runs while batting first. In response, when KKR openers landed in the field, umpire Syed Khalid examined the bat of opener Sunil Naren and Angkrish Raghuvanshi. Naren’s bat failed in this test. The thick part of his bat could not get out of the gauge.
Naren was also seen talking to the umpire after this. But after this, when Raghuvanshi’s bat was examined, his bat passed in the Test.

After this, when Enrique Norcia landed for batting, his bat also failed in the Test. The incident occurred at the beginning of the 16th over of KKR’s innings. Due to this, the game stopped for a while. Let us know that this was the first match of Norcia in IPL 2025.
Now know what is ‘gauge test’
Let us know that the umpires have started checking the size of the bat on the field in the current season of IPL. Checking the size of the bat is not a new rule. But earlier this investigation was done inside the dressing room. However, the Cricket Board of India (BCCI) has allowed match officials to investigate the bat on the field in any way if needed to be more vigilant in this era of power-touching.
During this test, umpires keep a device ‘Bat Gauge’ to check the bat size. If the bat passes through that gauge, then the bat is considered right. If he gets stuck in it, then the bat has to change.

What should be the size of the bat
According to the rules, the width of the bat face should not exceed 4.25 inches (10.79 cm). The thickness of the middle part (embossed part) cannot exceed 2.64 inches (6.7 cm). At the same time, the maximum width of the edge cannot exceed 1.56 inches (four cm). The length of the bat cannot exceed 38 inches (96.4 cm) from the top to the base of the handle.
The bat of these players has also failed in the test
In the last few days, Shimron Hetmyer of Rajasthan Royals, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) Phil Salat and Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya were measured with bat gauge during the game on the field. The size of the bat of all these players was found to be correct.
