16 people were killed in a military airstrike on Sunday in Zamfara, the north-western state of African country Nigeria. According to news agency AFP, a pilot had mistakenly considered the local people’s defense force to be a criminal gang. The Nigerian Army has been fighting criminal gangs in this area for a long time. They are locally called dacoits.
These fighters attack villages, kidnap people for ransom and burn their houses. Because of this, common people living here also take guns in self-defense and drive the criminals out of the areas.
Also on Saturday, bandits attacked Dangebe village in Zamfara and looted many animals. After this, the villagers attacked them with guns and were returning after driving them out, when the fighter plane opened fire on them near Tungar Kara village.
Amnesty International puts the death toll at 20. Nigerian authorities have been demanded to conduct an immediate and impartial investigation into this airstrike. The death toll in this incident may increase further.
