India has sought new information from the US to further the investigation against 26/11 Mumbai terror attack accused Tahawwur Rana. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has sent a formal request under the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT) with the US in this case. This step has been taken after new clues were found during the interrogation of Rana. It is believed that after the arrival of this information, many secrets can be made from Tahawwur Rana.
Government sources said that NIA has sought latest information from America in connection with the investigation of this attack related to the deaths of citizens of Israel, Britain and America. This communication has been done through authorized channels as per the prescribed procedure. A senior NIA official said that based on the new things that have come to light during the interrogation of Rana, more documents and information have been sought from America under the MLAT process.
Tahawwur Rana is lodged in Tihar Jail in India.
Rana, a Canadian businessman of Pakistani origin, is currently lodged in Delhi’s Tihar Jail. He was extradited from the US on 10 April 2024. Before extradition, he was in judicial custody at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Los Angeles, USA. The extradition process was completed under the India-US Extradition Treaty. Rana made several attempts to circumvent the legal hurdles, but was eventually brought to India after exhausting all his legal options.

Relationship with David Headley and terrorist conspiracy
NIA investigation revealed that Rana had planned this attack along with the main conspirator of 26/11 attack, David Coleman Headley alias Dawood Geelani. The investigating agency has found evidence of a large number of phone calls and electronic conversations between the two. Headley is currently serving a sentence in an American prison. Rana is accused of conspiring with banned terrorist organizations like Lashkar-e-Taiba and Harkat-ul-Jihadi Islami.

Terror wreaks havoc on India’s financial capital
On the night of 26 November 2008, 10 Pakistani terrorists entered Mumbai via sea. They fired indiscriminately in several areas of the city, including Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus railway station, Taj Hotel, Oberoi Trident Hotel and Jewish center Nariman House. A total of 166 people were killed in this attack, including American, British and Israeli citizens. Rana is accused of planning these attacks and supporting Headley.
