Manoj Jarange, leader of the Maratha Reservation Movement, reached Mumbai on Friday morning before the protest. Manoj Jarange will lead a one -day hunger strike on Friday at Azad Maidan in Mumbai demanding Maratha reservation. Manoj Jarang, along with a convoy of hundreds of vehicles, started a march from his village in Jalna district on Wednesday. He was welcomed by supporters in Vashi as soon as he entered Mumbai on Friday. Thousands of his supporters have already reached Mumbai.
Demand to recognize Marathas as a clan
43 -year -old Jarange is demanding 10 percent reservation for the Maratha community under the Other Backward Classes (OBC) category. Jarang has said that his supporters will protest peacefully and will not obstruct Ganesh festival. Jarange demands that all the Marathas be recognized as a kunbi. Kunbi is a caste attached to a farming class, which is included in the OBC category. With which they will get the benefit of reservation in government jobs and education.
The Jalna police, after imposing 40 conditions on his supporters, had allowed them to continue the march, in which they were instructed to maintain law and order, do not obstruct the movement of vehicles and avoid raising objectionable slogans. The Mumbai Police has allowed Jarang to hold a peaceful protest at Azad Maidan between 9 am and 6 pm on August 29. Police said that all the protesters would have to leave from there at 6 pm.
