Maharashtra Thane Court Sentences Man To 7 Years In Jail For Assaulting Woman Doctor; Message Against Violence – Amar Ujala Hindi News Live – Maharashtra: Female doctor attacked with hammer during Covid-19, sentenced to 7 years’ imprisonment; the court said

The court has sentenced a man found guilty of attacking and robbing a female doctor in Maharashtra’s Thane district to seven years’ imprisonment. The court said that this case is one of those examples of violence against doctors, which the law was made to prevent. Stringent punishment for such crimes is necessary so that a message is sent to the society that violence against doctors will not be tolerated.

Additional Sessions Judge Vasundhara Bhosalen, in her order dated October 31, also imposed a fine of ₹20,000 on 56-year-old accused Rashid Shakeel Khan. The copy of the order was released on Saturday.

Legal action and decision

The court found the accused guilty of causing hurt by house breaking and robbery with a weapon under sections of the Indian Penal Code. Additionally, he was also convicted under the Prevention of Violence against Doctors and Medical Institutions Act, 2019.

The court ordered that out of the ₹20,000 fine, ₹10,000 be paid to the doctor as compensation for the physical and mental harm he suffered. A total of 14 witnesses in this case testified in support of the prosecution, after which the accused was convicted.

What was the matter?

Additional Public Prosecutor R. P. Patil told the court that on January 3, 2021, when the COVID-19 pandemic was at its peak in the country, accused Rashid Khan came to Dr. Gayatri Nandlal Jaiswal’s clinic in Bhayandar on the pretext of inquiring about the RT-PCR test. The doctor asked him to wait, due to which he got angry and went away.

After some time he returned and suddenly attacked the doctor brutally with an iron hammer. He hit the doctor several times on the head, causing serious injuries. After the attack, the accused looted the doctor’s gold chain, ring, mobile phone and ₹5,000 in cash and fled from the spot.

The doctor was seriously injured

The doctor suffered serious head injuries in the attack, including a blood clot on the brain. The court said that these injuries fall in the category of ‘serious injuries’ and if timely treatment was not given, they could have proved fatal.
