The Maharashtra government on Monday appealed to the central government to intervene to prevent Karnataka from increasing the height of the Almetti Dam on the Krishna River. The Maharashtra government argues that if this happens, the water of Krishna river will be filled backwards. Due to this, there may be floods in Kolhapur and Sangli districts.
Maharashtra Water Resources Minister Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil has submitted a memorandum to Union Water Power Minister CR Patil in this regard. The memorandum states that the Karnataka government wants to increase the height of the dam from 519.60 meters to 524.256 meters. If this happens, there will be serious and irreversible consequences for flood-prone Sangli and Kolhapur districts located in the Krishna River Basin.
