A private jet plane crashed shortly after taking off from Turkey’s capital Ankara on Tuesday night. A total of 8 people, including Libyan Army Chief General Mohammed Ali Ahmed al-Haddad, died in this accident.

According to Libyan officials, the plane had a technical fault, which led to the accident. The Libyan military delegation had come to Ankara for high-level talks with Turkey to enhance defense cooperation and was returning back to Libya.

Those killed in the accident included Libyan Army Chief General al-Fituri Ghrabil, Brigadier General Mahmoud al-Katawi, Advisor to the Chief of Staff Mohammed al-Asawi Diab, military photographer Mohammed Omar Ahmed Mahjoub and three crew members.

The plane had sent a signal for emergency landing

Libyan Prime Minister Abdul-Hamid Dabaiba issued a statement on Facebook confirming the death of General al-Haddad and other officers and calling it a huge loss for the country.

According to Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya, the plane took off from Ankara’s Esenboga Airport at around 8 pm local time and contact was lost after some time. The aircraft had sent a signal for emergency landing near Haimana area, but no contact could be made after that.

Ankara airport temporarily closed

CCTV footage released on local TV channels showed a bright light and explosion-like scene in the night sky. The wreckage of the plane was found near a village in Haymana district, about 70 kilometers south of Ankara.

Following the accident, Ankara Airport was temporarily closed and many flights were diverted to other airports. Turkey’s Justice Ministry has appointed four officials to investigate the accident. At the same time, the Libyan government has also decided to send its team to Ankara to cooperate in the investigation.
