Congress MP Shashi Tharoor said that in the last few years, the Congress Party’s stance has become more leftist than before, so that it can counter the divisive politics of the Bharatiya Janata Party. At an event organized in Hyderabad, Tharoor said that his party is now more left leaning at the level of policies and ideology, whereas during the Manmohan Singh era, Congress used to adopt a more centrist stance.
He said that if you see the Congress during the time of Dr. Manmohan Singh, it was more centrist. But now the party has shown inclination towards the left both at the strategic and ideological level. Whether this change is strategic or ideological remains to be seen. Tharoor said the country’s politics witnessed a centrist phase from 1991 to 2009, when both the Congress and the BJP adopted some similar economic policies. But in the last few years, Congress has increased its left inclination by associating itself with the issues of the common people.

Tharoor said these things in a lecture given on the topic Radical Centrism: My Vision for India. He also said that internal democracy is necessary in every political party and it is wrong to remain in any post indefinitely. When asked if he would contest for the AICC president’s post again, Tharoor said there was no possibility of that happening as of now, though he was happy that a democratic process existed in the Congress.

Apart from this, on America’s statement that foreign skilled workers should work in America and train Americans and then return, Tharoor said that India has no objection to this. We want our people to experience abroad and then return to India and contribute to the progress of the country.
