Ladakh Protest: Sixth Schedule Agitation Turns Violent, Four Protesrs Killed – Amar Ujala Hindi News Live

Four people died in a violent protest in Leh over the demand for the union territory Ladakh to be included in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. More than 80 people have been injured in clashes between young protesters and police. The injured include 40 policemen. The protesters set fire to BJP and Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council offices and several vehicles. Seeing the situation uncontrollable, the security forces fired tear gas shells, lathi -charged and fired. Curfew has been imposed in Leh and internet service has been stopped.

The four -day annual Ladakh Festival was canceled after the violence. The gathering of people was banned. Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk broke the hunger strike and appealed to the youth to maintain peace. A large number of students were among the protesters. Wangchuk was sitting on hunger strike for 15 days on demands. 15 workers of the Youth Branch of Ladakh Apex Body (LAB) were also on a hunger strike of 35 days from September 10. The condition of two workers worsened to the hospital on Tuesday, after which LAB announced the Leh bandh on Wednesday. A large number of youths took to the streets in the band and took out a march.

Violence erupted by Wangchuk’s statements: Government

The central government said that the violence erupted due to the statements of Sonam Wangchuk. The Home Ministry said, “There has been progress in talks between the government and the representatives of the groups of Ladakh, but some people inspired by politics are not happy with it.” The ministry said, Wangchuk misled people by provocating protests of the Arab Spring-style during the hunger strike and the demonstrations of Jane-G in Nepal.

The sixth schedule of the Constitution currently includes four northeastern states of Tripura, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Assam. It makes special provisions regarding the financial powers used through Schedule Governance, the powers of the President and the Governor, the type of local bodies, the alternative judicial system and the autonomous councils.
