The Karnataka government has taken a big step to curb fake and wrong news on social media. Under this, the government has drafted a strict law on social media to prevent fake news and wrong information. The name of this new proposed law is Karnataka Missinformation and Fake News (Ban) Bill, 2025. It will be presented at the next cabinet meeting soon.

In the case, the government says that the number of internet users in India is continuously increasing (currently 27%) and social media has become a very powerful medium. In such a situation, any false news can create a lot of ruckus in the country. Therefore, people should not take any message forward without knowing the truth.
What is the purpose of the law?
At the same time, in the matter of the objective of bringing this law, in the case, the Siddaramaiah government says that false and misleading news on social media obstructs the peace, health, security and fair elections of the society. This strict step is being taken to stop this.

Provision for strict punishment in law
In the release issued by the Government of Karnataka, it has been said that if someone intentionally spreads false information, it can be in jail up to 7 years, or a fine of up to Rs 10 lakh or both. At the same time, if any person inside or outside Karnataka sends false information to the people living in the state, then he can get a jail and fine of 2 to 5 years. Along with this, if someone helps someone in spreading fake news, then he can be jailed for up to 2 years.
How will the sight be kept?
Let us know that the government of Karnataka will create fake news prevention authority on a social media to oversee this law. It will include ministers (presidents) of Kannada and Culture Department, one member of the Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council, two representatives of social media companies and a senior IAS officer (secretary).

What will be banned?
Under this law, fake news, wrong statements, edited videos or spreading false things will be completely banned on social media. Abusive, indecent or anti-pheminist posts towards women will also be banned. Along with this, the material that insults the symbols and beliefs of Sanatan Dharma will also be banned.
