He is participating in the International T-20 League going on in UAE. They are part of Dubai Capitals. The matches of the tournament are being telecast on Zee Entertainment Sports. West Indies power hitter Powell talked about his power hitting, West Indies cricket and IPL.

Question and answer conversation with Rovman Powell

Question- Your team has lost the first match. Being the defending champion, what are your future plans? Powell- I think we need to learn from the last match. We have to see whether our planning was correct or not. Were we able to implement our planning on the field? We have a few days before the next match. We will work on our shortcomings in training and come back stronger.

Rovman Powell’s team Dubai Capitals lost by 4 wickets in the first match. Desert Viper’s Andris Goss played an inning of 56 runs on 36 balls.

Question- Till now no team has won two consecutive titles. What would you say on this? Powell- This shows that every year the teams come back stronger. We are the defending champions, so everyone makes special preparations to defeat us. We have to play well consistently, and once we find the rhythm, we have to win as many matches as possible. If we reach the playoffs then there is every possibility of winning.

Question- IPL franchise KKR has retained you. How did you feel after hearing this news? Powell- Nice to hear that. The franchise showed confidence in me. Now it is my turn to live up to that trust by going into the 2026 IPL.

Question- When you come to bat. Start hitting sixes with the first ball. It doesn’t matter to you what the situation is…what is the secret behind it? Powell- It’s hard work. When you work hard, your self-confidence increases. As a power hitter you have to do what you want to do even in difficult situations. My job is to hit sixes.

Question- Andre Russell has taken retirement from IPL. Now fans are expecting the same role from you. Do you feel pressure? Powell- No, not at all. I never considered myself a replacement for Russell. I will try to fill his place. He has performed well for KKR on many occasions. Russell is a legend for KKR. My effort is to first make my place in the IPL and then show a good game for the team and the fans.

Question- West Indies has been world champion twice in both T20 and ODI, but for some time now the team’s performance in Test and international cricket has been declining. Why so? Powell- The right people have not been placed in the right positions. There should be people in decision making positions who have deep love for West Indies cricket. I feel that the people who are in the administration of West Indies cricket do not think about promoting cricket. Our cricket infrastructure is also not of that level. We have talented players, but there is no system like India, Australia and England to prepare them.

Question- You are a power hitter. Which active power hitters in the world do you like? Powell- When I was young, Chris Gayle was the greatest for me. Then Andre Russell and Kieron Pollard, who have been power hitting at the top level for the last 15 years. I always try to learn from him.

Question- T20 World Cup is just 3 months away. Can West Indies surprise everyone once again? Powell- Yes, absolutely. We have players. For me, it is not a surprise if we do well. Because, we have been champions twice. If the team gets the right mindset in pressure situations, we usually go far in the tournament. Hopefully we play good cricket in Sri Lanka and India and make the fans happy.
