A 27-year-old youth from Giridih district of Jharkhand lost his life in a shootout between police and liquor smugglers in Saudi Arabia. Vijay Kumar Mahato, a resident of Dudhapania village of Dumri block, was working as a tower line fitter in a private company in Saudi for the last 9 months.
According to officials, Mahato died in Jeddah on October 16. According to news agency PTI, his family initially believed that Vijay Mahato had survived after being injured.
Vijay Kumar Mahato died in firing
Sikandar Ali, a social activist who works on the issues of migrant workers, said, ‘He (Vijay Kumar Mahato) had sent a message on WhatsApp to his wife Basanti Devi, in which he said that he was caught in the crossfire and was injured.’ Ali further said, ‘Devi informed her in-laws about this, but they thought that she was undergoing treatment. On October 24 itself, his company informed the family that he had died in the firing.
Sikandar said there was a shootout between Jeddah police and an extortion gang linked to the illegal liquor trade. Jharkhand Labor Department officials said they are in talks with Indian authorities in Saudi Arabia to bring back Mahato’s body.
Attempt to bring Giridih dead body from Saudi Arabia
Migrant Control Cell team leader Shikha Lakra confirmed that the department has received information about the incident and has received a formal request to send back the body to Giridih. “We immediately contacted the Indian Embassy and are trying to contact Jeddah police officials to complete the formalities and bring the body back to its native place,” Lakra told PTI.
Ali said he has alerted the state labor department and Giridih district administration to assist Mahato’s family and seek compensation from Saudi authorities.
