The Ministry of External Affairs said on Monday that India will take all necessary steps to protect its national interests and economic security. He made this statement when questions are being raised by the US and the European Union on India about oil imports from Russia. This situation is created after the commencement of Ukraine War.

Ministry spokesman Randhir Jaiswal said, India bought oil from Russia because earlier the oil from where the oil came, was now being sent to Europe due to the war. Jaiswal said that at that time the US had also encouraged India to buy oil from Russia, so that the global energy market would remain stable. The aim of whatever oil India is getting from Russia is that consumers in the country can get cheap and reliable energy.

Jaiswal has also taken a dig at the European Union, which has targeted the Indian oil refinery for their exports. He said that importing oil from Russia is a compulsion in India, which is due to the status of the global market. He also said that the countries who are criticizing India, are doing business with Russia themselves.

Earlier, US President Donald Trump on Monday threatened to impose heavy tariffs on India. Trump alleged that the goods sent from India to America are going to increase the tariff in large quantities. Trump said that India is buying a large amount of crude oil from Russia and selling it to other countries and is earning huge profits from it. Trump had announced a punitive penalty for purchasing oil and gas from Russia along with imposing 25 per cent tariffs on Indian imports last week.

The government also presented trade figures with these countries with Russia. He reported that in 2024, there was a 67.5 billion euros trade between the European Union and Russia. In addition, the service trade in 2023 was 17.2 billion euros. This is much higher than the total trade between India and Russia. European countries imported a record 16.5 million tonnes of liquid natural gas (LNG) from Russia in 2024, which exceeds the previous record of 15.21 million tonnes in 2022.

The government further stated that the trade between Europe and Russia is not limited to energy only. It also includes fertilizer, mineral products, chemicals, iron and steel products, machinery and transport equipment. The Government of India also questioned the US import from Russia. He said that the US still buys uranium hexafloride, paladium for electric vehicles, fertilizers and chemicals for its nuclear power needs from Russia.

The government said that India started buying crude oil from Russia when traditional supply was diverted to Europe, as the Russia-Ukraine war started. At that time, the US itself encouraged India to buy oil from Russia to maintain the stability of the global energy market. The government termed the US and the European Union targeting India as ‘unfair and absurd’.

Trump wrote on social media platform Truth Social, India is not only buying oil in large quantities from Russia, but is also earning huge profits by selling large parts of that oil at high prices in the open market. Along with this, Trump said, India does not care about how many people are killing Russia’s war machine in Ukraine. For this reason, I am going to increase the tariff in America on Indian goods. Thank you for focusing on this issue!
