For the first time, India appointed Vijay Lakshmi Pandit as the ambassador to Russia (then Soviet Union). Russia sent Kirill Novikov to Delhi as India’s ambassador. This picture is from the same time when he landed at Delhi airport with his wife and children. This was the day when the unbreakable foundation of India-Russia relations was laid.

Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru visited the Soviet Union for the first time as PM in 1955. During this time, he was welcomed at the airport in Moscow by the then Communist Party Secretary and Russia’s biggest leader, Nikita Khrushchev. However, this was not Jawaharlal Nehru’s first Soviet visit. He also went to Moscow in 1927 with his father to participate in the 10th anniversary of the October Revolution.

The friendship between India and Russia was deepening. 5 months after Nehru’s visit, for the first time, Chairman of the USSR Council of Ministers Nikolai Bulganin and Nikita Khrushchev (Chief Secretary of the CPSU Central Committee) themselves visited India. Both the leaders spent several days in Hyderabad House in New Delhi. Both had come to India on a 3-week long visit. This visit was also special because for the first time after the beginning of the Cold War, a Russian leader had visited a country which was not communist. This picture is from that tour.

On their visit to India’s Paradise (Kashmir), Khrushchev and Bulganin were welcomed by Bakshi Ghulam Mohammad, the then Prime Minister of Jammu and Kashmir. The visit of top leaders of the Soviet Union to Kashmir was discussed all over the world. During this, Khrushchev gave a big statement on Kashmir and called it a part of India. In the picture Bakshi and Khrushchev are feeding each other Gustaba (Kashmiri dish).

This picture is of Khrushchev and Bulganin’s road show in Kashmir. During this road show, Prime Minister Bakshi Ghulam Mohammad and Sadar-e-Riyasat Karan Singh were also with him. A crowd of thousands had gathered to welcome him.

During their visit to India, Khrushchev and Bulganin visited Vadamadurai village near Coimbatore before returning to Russia. It was here that Bulganin stopped to drink coconut water in a field. Even today people call this place ‘Bulganin Thottam’. This picture is from that time.

As Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru visited the Soviet Union for the second time. During this time the Soviet government gifted him a cow. When Soviet Ambassador Ivan Benedictov and his wife handed over the cow rope to Nehru, he immediately started feeding it. This was a very memorable time for both the countries.

On April 12, 1961, Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first person to fly in space. After his success, he came to India this year. The picture is from the same time when Nehru along with Gagarin took out a rally on the streets of Mumbai. Later, Russia supported India in conquering the sky and space.

On June 16, 1963, for the first time in the world a woman flew into space. Astronaut Valentina Tereshkova visited India in the same year. Soviet ambassadors Ivan Benediktov and Valentine participated in a program in Delhi along with the then PM Nehru. This is a picture of that time.

19 years had passed since India’s independence. Till now no big steel plant was established in the country. The Indian government did not have the technology to set up the plant. For this work, India looked towards its friend Russia, after which Russia immediately announced to send special help. Result- In 1966, the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi laid the foundation stone of Bokaro Steel Plant with the help of Russia.

A war broke out between India and Pakistan over Bangladesh. Western countries including America were supporting Pakistan. America sent its seventh fleet of warships against India in this war.
In response, Russia stopped the ships of America, Britain and other countries from attacking India by blocking the sea route with submarines equipped with nuclear missiles.

After the Bangladesh war, the friendship between India and Russia became an example for the whole world. Other countries of the world started keeping an eye on this friendship. After this, when Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev came to India on an official visit, Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi went straight to the airport to welcome him.
