In 2024, India took this port on lease for 10 years.
The US government has given India a six-month exemption from sanctions on Iran’s Chabahar port. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal gave this information in the weekly press conference on Thursday.
Earlier, America had said that from September 29, it will impose fine on the companies involved in running this port, giving money or any work related to it. However, later this exemption was extended to October 27, the expiry of which had ended 3 days ago. Now it has been extended for 6 months.
India has taken Chabahar on lease for 10 years in 2024. Under this, India will invest 120 million dollars here and will provide a credit line (cheap loan) of 250 million dollars.
Chabahar port helps India trade directly with Afghanistan, Central Asia, Russia and Europe.
4 big benefits for India from exemption to Chabahar Port
1. Access to Central Asia without Pakistan
- Now India will not have to go through Pakistan to send goods to Afghanistan or other Asian countries.
- India can send its goods directly to Afghanistan and Central Asia from Iran’s Chabahar Port. This will save both time and money.
2. Business will increase
- India will now be able to easily send its goods, medicines, food and industrial products to other countries through Chabahar.
- This will increase India’s exports and reduce logistics expenses.
- It will be easier for India to buy oil from Iran. Both the countries together can make Chabahar a trade hub.
3. India’s investment will be safe
- India has invested a lot of money and resources in the development of Chabahar Port.
- With America’s exemption, India will now be able to move forward with its project without any hindrance.
4. China-Pakistan counter
- Chabahar Port is close to Pakistan’s Gwadar Port (where China is investing).
- Therefore this port makes India strategically strong and helps to counter the China-Pakistan nexus.
India sends essential salmon to Afghanistan from Chabahar
Earlier, India had to pass through Pakistan to send goods to Afghanistan, but this was difficult due to border dispute. Chabahar made this path easy. India sends wheat to Afghanistan from this port and can bring gas-oil from Central Asia.
In 2018, India and Iran signed an agreement to develop Chabahar. America had given relaxation to India in some restrictions for this project. This port is strategically important for India compared to Pakistan’s Gwadar Port, which is being built by China.
There was a short 18-month agreement between India and Iran regarding this port in 2018, which was repeatedly extended.
What has India done so far for the port?
India started talks with Iran for Chabahar port in 2003 during the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government. It stopped due to US-Iran tensions. In 2013, Manmohan Singh had talked about investing Rs 800 crore.
In 2016, PM Narendra Modi signed an agreement with the leaders of Iran and Afghanistan, in which India announced a loan of Rs 700 crore for a terminal and Rs 1250 crore for the development of the port.
In 2024, the then Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra discussed connectivity with the Foreign Minister of Iran. According to Indian company IPGL, the port will have a capacity of 82 million tonnes when completed.
Other big things from the press conference….
- Since January this year, 2,790 Indian citizens have been deported from America. These people were living there illegally. These people have been brought to India only after checking their identity and nationality. Apart from this, about 100 Indian citizens have also been sent back from Britain this year.
- Talks are going on regarding trade agreement between India and America. India is working towards completing the agreement with America.
- India completely rejects the statements of OIC (Organization of Islamic Cooperation). OIC has no right to comment on India’s internal affairs. OIC had given a statement regarding Kashmir.
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to the new Prime Minister of Japan and congratulated her on assuming the post. The two leaders discussed India-Japan relations and issues related to the Quad group.
- Some Indian companies have been issued licenses to import rare earth minerals from China.
